Mobile Hackathon 2010, Toronto

miwhack

The 2nd Annual Mobile Innovation Week here in Toronto kicks off with a Mobile Hackathon!

Right in the heart of Toronto’s downtown and in a corner of OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design), three groups of mobile developers diligently work on creating apps that will be part of Toronto’s Intelligent Cities initiative (perhaps). The event is a two day affair and aims at connecting mobile developers in the Toronto and GTA.

Interesting is the discussions around community / local empowerment using social media and open data. The developers are most certainly city focused and social aware. Some of the key words brought up are #healthcare, #transportation #fixmystreet #fixmycity.

There is a small group of interested devs for Android and as I sit among them as I type. My purpose here was to locate android developers and to get a feel for what apps or projects were out there. Heading up the event was Jason Silva, Organizer. I managed to catch Jason for a little impromptu interview.

Use Simple Hand Gestures for Commands via Camera Phones

Android phones can now use their camera features to call up commands using hand gestures. Thanks to eyesight Technologies, developer of NUI (Natural User Interface) solutions, for just launching their technology to the Android platform.

By utilizing a device’s front facing camera, real-time processing and machine vision algorithms, simple hand gestures can now be translated into commands that control various functions on your phone. The technology offers a truly remarkable software solution that maximizes an Android device’s CPU, power consumption and memory usage.

Recently, the mobile technology sphere has seen a number of “think outside the box” user interface integrations that enable people to engage with their devices in a more natural way. The recent implementation of SWYPE, a text input feature for screens has changed the behavior of how people interact with a virtual keyboard. No doubt, eyesight Technologies, with the use of intuitive hand gestures to call up certain smartphone commands will definitely play a major role in changing the landscape of how we use our devices.

A good technology is an invisible one. eyeSight’s Touch Free Interface technology for Android-based devices introduces exactly that – a new level of interaction that is natural, intuitive and simple to use,” said Itay Katz eyeSight’s Founder & CEO. “Users are looking for ways to ease, improve and enjoy their day to day interaction with their mobile phone, ideally aiming to gain effortless control of the device’s applications and functions, which is where eyeSight’s solution comes to place, answering exactly this need.”

You can watch a demo below:

eyesight Technologies has also been involved in developing and adapting their Touch Free User Interface for mobile games. After having showcased their technology at the 2009 Mobile Game Forum in London, the message was clear – mobile game interaction was clearly taken up a notch. Their earlier invitation to the Nokia Developer Summit last year in Monaco even had device manufacturers and developers drooling.

Today, they’ve launched their technology for Android and this is certainly going to help improve the Android experience. At yesterday’s WWDC10 and Jobs’ presentation of the new iPhone iOS4 and all its goodies, the future of mobile devices just keeps on getting sexier!

eyesight Technologies will be present at CommunicAsia 2010 event in Singapore (June 15-18). If you would like to schedule a demo, you can send an email to CommunicAsia@eyesight-tech.com.

Education and gaming: Holistic Mobility Part 1

If I were an educator or one that had a certain amount of influence as to where the future of education will lead (and at this point in time, the path seems really obvious – i.e. serious games platform), then I would gather up a team of android developers, creatives, a focus group that consists of the school age up to post graduate students, parents, government officials, representatives from industry sectors, parents, startups, artists/muscians, game developers .. and collaborate on ideas – just ideas, first.

And from this series of round table talks or brainstorming dialogue, the android developers would then get a base picture of what might need to be implemented for a series of edutainment courses, that all take place on a gaming platform.

The Android Platform is the most likely platform for the development of serious games on mobile devices, be it netbooks, smartphones, whatever. World systems are not stagnant (maybe some governments), and neither are its inhabitants (except for the niche non-ambitious folk, but perhaps, they too can be inspired!). We are moving towards a system of societies that are mobile, not just on one plane but holistically.

    “Holistic Mobility

the act of integrating and thus transitioning one’s daily thoughts and actions into a metamorphosis of new behaviour that involves a mobile device with internet connectivity.” – digitalfemme

Everyone, on some level wants to learn. Passively or agressively conscious of it, there will be a time when the opportunity for passive learning (which has been taking place on game platforms for decades), will be a brain faculty default. This will be more evident through the use of mobile devices. And the devices that run operating systems that offer flexibility and openess to new ideas, will be an important tool in the process of defining and refining Holistic Mobility.

Mindful Open Source projects will be the stepping stones that will help quide the transition into Holistic Mobility. The Open Source Community has been preparing for this, whether or not they realize their impact.

This IS the future of education. We ARE moving towards it. We may not be ready but our youth and the generation earlier – they expect this.
