Droid Does it Again!

One, two, three strikes and yer out!

Only this time, the mobile playing field has just gotten a lot more, how would you say … “muddy”?

The game has definitely shifted. Verizon’s blatant iDon’t video, aimed at putting the iPhone in a corner has come back with a triple whammy – KaPow!

Three clever ads just came out that focuses on the “man’s man” clout. Brilliant, robust (?) and somewhat sexy ads that target three specific areas that men in general want to rule in. I’m just waiting for an ad that’s a bit more racy and well, sexual. Something in a bedroom scene. I KNOW one is soon to emerge on the internet …. any day now.

I’m not sure if this run of ad campaign is meant to hit the “What should I get *blank* for a Christmas Present” or “I want a Verizon Droid for my Christmas Present” crowd, but it certainly is causing a stir. I, personally, love it. I appreciate the marketing brains and person that thought out the copy that goes into these ads. I appreciate the storyboard layout, the graphics, set design and audio/visual component that pulls all the elements together to create a catchy ad (never mind, three), the music, the actors, the editing .. everything.

The Motorola Droid is not a pretty phone. It’s dark, apparently more heavy (but solid) and has a “down and dirty” real to it that the other hardwares no longer seem to have. It reminds me of the simple days of mobile gadgets when simply … just being able to hold a mobile gadget in your hand was a pretty awesome thing.

My first mobile phone was a Motorola Flip phone (1995). They had a deal with WHERE Magazines International in Toronto, for the employees to get a 20% discount. Of course I jumped on the opportunity. The phone now, compared to even the largest mobile phone on the market (the iPhone?) looks like a dinosaur in comparison, so to speak, but the Motorola Droid, does have a more primitive, machine-animal, look and feel to it, in terms of mobile casings go (in my abstract opinion).

For me, this primitive, machine-animal look (yeah, I know, it’s just a mobile gadget. So? I have a quirky imagination), fits perfectly to the trio ads that Verizon has come out with.

Manly. Macho. Get-it-Done. Do-the-Job. No Hassles-Smart-Phone. Get-it-Done-Right, yeah baby, oooh, ahhh, oh.. okay, where was I?

In these days of gender equality (ppfffttt! Whatever. I just had to say that), the metro-sexual, the stay-at-home-dad (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the 30-something-still-living-with-his-parents-man – I watch these ads and think … “Hmmm, a man with a Droid that just does is right … hmmmm… I like that.”

*singing* “Do it to me one more time… once is never enough …. for a droid like you .. (that’s why there’s three ads).

Oh, and here are the three ads.

It's Droid Day!

Yay! It’s Droid Day.

November 6 has finally arrived and all the hype surrounding Verizon’s new Motorola Droid will reach it’s peak in Verizon stores in the U.S.

The much anticipated android phone, marketed and branded as a Droid phone, has been said to be the closest rival (android based) to the iPhone, so far. Rival, however, is really not the right word, in my opinion.

Indeed, the ingenius one sentence iDon’t video’s that depict the main differences between the android OS and Apple’s iPhone OS may have started that stream of thinking (but that’s just brilliant ad campaigning for hype purposes). Other more  notable and worthy mobile phone sites started comparing the two smartphones in what seemed like endless posts of opinions from all sides (which gave mainstream a wealth of information on both mobile operating systems).

But everybody has an opinion and even if two people agree on one side, there are always differences as to why. I still think it’s like comparing Apples to Passion Fruit. They are both fruit, they are both relatively sweet, depending on their levels of sweetness at any given time and within various versions, however, there can also be significantly main differences.

What’s important to keep in mind is how an individual responds to each phone. Be it, Symbian, Windows Mobile, the iPhone or an Android based phone, thank goodness there are differences to suit people’s tastes and ways in  preferences with navigating through their smartphones.

After all, we ARE individuals just as much as we, at the same time, are commonly human (although I DO have my doubts with some people).

What I do believe in, with regards to the Android OS, just like so many other developers that have joined the Android Movement, is the fact that because of its’ Open Source nature, the potential for empowerment is endless.

This fact alones, opens up so many opportunities for developers and it also challenges the playing field for other industries as well. Mobile phone designers have gotten more inspired, marketing entities are carefully looking at how to exploit this phenomenal movement, and the business-model inclined, are busy figuring out strategies on how to make the Android Movement work for them.

I, on the other hand am a mere observer of life.

I observe, absorb and try to make intelligent and mindful connections with all data that I take in.

I make sure to be reminded that life is about cycles, as with the seasons, with fashion and historically speaking, also with technology.

Android is a movement. It’s a movement in “empowerment” to a group of people that normally were not  given the open style freedom to take a source code and imagine the impossible!

I am the Android PR (People Relationships) Gal. I stand behind this movement.

Today is Droid Day!

Let the games begin!

Don’t forget to take a peek at the cartoon-of-the-day.

Motorola Droid: Countdown Starts!

New Verizon Motorola Android Phone

After much hype during the past two weeks and then a Droid Does video that exposes the weakness of the not-so-perfect iPhone, Verizon came through for Android Fans. The officially release date for its’ new Motorola Droid phone was announced earlier today and the magic date will be November 6.

As usual, Boy Genius gave an awesome Preview of the Motorola Droid. I highly recommend that you read BGR’s preview.

What’s even more exciting is the fact that the Motorola Droid will come with the new Android 2.0 (Eclair). I’m really excited about this Android Phone, because personally, based on BGR’s preview and screenshots, this Android Phone is by far the sleekiest and sexiest Andoid phone out there. I wish I could hold this awesome gadget in my hand.

We love the build quality of this phone. It’s mostly metal, and while it’s heavy, it gives you a reassuring quality feel that you just don’t find much nowadays as handsets get thinner, lighter, smaller, and cheaper. ….. Really solid and it seems to be manufactured very well. The slider is not spring-assisted, but when you push the metal bezel around the gorgeous display upwards, you get a satisfying click. It does the same when you slide it closed as well. – Boy Genius

Oh man, how I want to experience that satisfying click.

I’m really, really feeling a little down right now because first of all, the reality of even getting a Motorola Droid here in Germany is next to nil (at least I am not aware of any other possibility) AND there is not one decent wireless carrier that can even come close to Verizon’s coverage here in Germany. Sorry, but it’s damn true.

I’m wondering now though, if there’s some way of getting a Motorola Droid, then perhaps … hmmmm … unlock, anyone?

iDon't Believe It

Verizon just upped the anty by creating an intro commercial for their up and coming Android Phone(s). A daring and witty play on Apple’s use of “i”. The ad depicts statements, starting with “iDon’t …” for all the things that an iPhone does not do, but an Android phone does.

I love the simplicity of the message and I love the brazen marketing strategy that aims at adding more *spice* to the hype that has been gaining momentum in the past two weeks surrounding Android.

I am sure this won’t be the first nor the last of marketing tactics targeted at outlining the differences between the iPhone OS and Android’s OS. Of course, the ads could go the opposite way too, depicting all that the iPhone is (design, UI, appstore savvy etc .. ) and what the Android platform still needs improvement with.

However, opportunity for improvement is going to be the new background song, as the Android Platform and the Android Movement continues to march along to the beat of their own drums.

Note: I am aware that this blog post is an “after the fact” post. I had a good excuse. I was in airport limbo. :-)
