Screens 2011

FITC: Screens 2011

FITC Mobile’s success in delivering developments in mobile technology has gotten a new name, Screens. The event will take place this November and will follow the original agenda of previous years.

Screens 2011

We’ll be on the look out for Thomas Purves again this year, to ask him how the mobile / wireless industry in Canada has changed since we last interviewed him.

Startups to Empower SWIFT

SWIFT

The list of the Top 10 startups (chosen by SWIFT) in the Innotribe $100k Startup Challenge has been published. We combed through the batch and were excited about the mobile mix. First off, congratulations to the Top 10. Secondly, it would be interesting to see which startup makes it to SIBOS 2011 and how SWIFT plans on utilizing their offerings. We’ve put in a request to attend as press and are waiting for the response. It would be a great opportunity to interview and get first hand “public” information on the mobile innovations that are being presented for the financial tech sector.

We will most definitely be requesting some form of interview with a few of the startups that interest us the most. We will be sharing them with you when that happens. If you’re one of the startups that are on the Top 10 List, and even if you’re not, and you have “android development” on your roadmap, we’d love to hear from you.

As much as “money makes the world go round, mobile applications makes it go around, that much faster.”

Innotribe $100k Startup Challenge

Innotribe

In an attempt to seek out startups that are integrating GOOGLE’s Android Mobile OS, we’ve turned to Innotribe’s list of submissions.

Innotribe:

Now in its third year, Innotribe at Sibos, Innotribe’s flagship event, runs throughout Sibos week and offers a comprehensive programme exploring a range of topics crucial to the financial industry. Innotribe at Sibos in Toronto will once again bring together a powerful combination of world experts to participate in an exciting mix of keynote sessions, case studies, and interactive discussions.

Sibos:

Every year Sibos brings together influential leaders from financial institutions, market infrastructures, multinational corporations and technology partners to do business and shape the future of the financial industry. Facilitated and organised by SWIFT for the SWIFT community, Sibos is much more than a conference and exhibition. It is a unique forum to collaborate and take collective action in payments, securities, cash management and trade. With the power to draw over 8,000 participants from across the globe, Sibos is unparalleled in its reputation to reach the entire financial services industry.

We’re excited to see a handful of startups implementing the use of mobile payments. We’d be more enthusiastic to see if they’ve integrated Android.

Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey (@jack) announced his new startup project, Square just last year. We’ve yet to see them include Android in their mobile mix. Naturally, we’re disappointed to see that most startups choose to build, deploy and launch on the Apple iOS first. We’re not saying NOT to include Apple’s iOS. We’re merely saying, “Why not include Android in your initial launch as well?”.

We hope to be attending the Sibos event in Toronto, for a chance to see what types of developments on Android’s mobile platform, are being utilized in the financial technology sector.

I’m sure we’ll have better findings at MWC 2012 in Barcelona, next year.

Netbooknews.com: Sascha Pallenberg

sxswsascha

The tablet world has started to see an onslaught of devices running on Android. Naturally, Sascha Pallenberg of Netbooknews.com, “the king of netbooks” as the phrase was first coined by Robert Scoble a.k.a. Scoblezier, is on top of everything netbook and android.

We caught up with Sascha at this year’s SXSW Digital Interactive, sitting against a wall next to a power outlet just outside of Exhibit Hall 3. What was Sacsha doing? Blogging of course!

Sascha blogging

In our mind, Sascha had the best business model ever developed by a blogger:

1. Move out of a country that back then, was a bit slow on accepting the notion that anyone who had a passion for anything could just set up a site and talk about it. Actually, much of the world was like that.

2. Create a blog, not only in your mother language but in the global language of choice.

3. Move into a country where your passion *products* are manufactured.

4. Team up with great people who share in your enthusiasm.

We’re sure there are other successful bloggers out there with similar or different stories but we don’t really know them personally. Sascha, we do. In fact, it was Mr. Pallenberg that made it possible for us to attend SXSW and most especially, the Team Android Event (more on this event later).

What was rather interesting for us was the opportunity to record a conversation that Sascha and Robert were having just outside on the patio of Lustre Pearl. It was rather dark but we managed to catch ALL of their candid talk on mobile and tech relevant topics. Robert was also capturing this conversation using CinchCast.

Here’s a glimpse of the conversation:

Once we have the full video version up, we’ll post the update on our twitter stream @whatsupandroid along with a follow up post.

Despite the never ending list of invites to all the cool SXSW parties our sources found out that Sascha was also there on business. Obviously. After digging deeper and stalking, bumping into Sascha every now and then we were able to find out who Sascha was meeting up with and why. Alas, we can’t share that here. But what we can share is another candid video of Sascha after he realized Foursquare had just received an update.

“Sorry Gowalla …. “

Sascha will also be keynoting at this year’s DroidCon Berlin this coming Thursday, March 24!
